Samatha Meditation – Nirvana Is Within Your Grasp!

Samatha meditation is a style of Buddhist meditation which was created to increase a person’s sustained, voluntary concentration with the goal being to effortlessly maintain this state for multiple hours.

Meditation is an integral part of Buddhist practices. It is based on the idea of attempting to liberate your mind so that you can arrive at virtue, wisdom, and enlightenment with the ultimate goal being to enter into a state of supreme bliss, also known as nirvana. In the state of nirvana, you are able to free yourself from all bindings, and you no longer must cycle through the phases of birth and death.

Practicing the eightfold noble path is a very important aspect of Buddhist meditation. The eightfold noble path includes the following virtues: right thought, right view right action, right speech, right livelihood, right effort, right concentration, and right mindfulness. A lot of the practices of Buddhist meditation are based on two things: Samatha, which translates to mean tranquility, and Vipassana, which means mindfulness.

Samatha meditation, or tranquility, focuses heavily on breathing and the enhancement of loving kindness.

In its teachings, practitioners are shown how to advance their lives through the four jhanas, or stages of knowledge. The goal of Samatha meditation is to hone your concentration abilities to the point where you can develop detachment and consequently, equanimity and happiness.

With Samatha meditation, practitioners try to train their brains so that they can focus on a single object for an extended period of time and then create a state of tranquility. In all, there are more than 40 different variations of Samatha meditation. The object that you focus on can be pretty much anything that you want, including water, a candle, an image, etc. And a popular breathing technique that is often employed is called anapanasati.

There is more to Samatha meditation than just focusing on your breath and concentrating on an image, however. Additionally, practitioners must rid themselves of the five vices, which include sensual desire, ill will, anxiety, slothfulness, and doubt. Once this occurs, great happiness can be achieved.

There are three principle benefits to practicing one of the forms of Samatha meditation. First is the attainment of happiness and peace of mind. Second is an agreeable rebirth, and third is the liberation from all mental bindings, which are the chief sources of sorrow and unhappiness.

Through the practice of Samatha meditation alone you will not be able to directly attain nirvana, but you will be taking important strides towards readying yourself to be able to achieve it. What you can attain through the practice of Samatha meditation is a beautiful state of calmness and tranquility inside yourself.

    Interesting. I didn’t realize Vipassana meditation kind of went hand in hand with Samatha.

    I like the idea of Samatha meditation since it incorporates loving kindness. Can’t go wrong with that, right?

    Definitely not, Terry, lol. Too bad you can’t achieve Nirvana with Samatha meditation by itself though.
